Tour of USCG Air Station - Detroit

March 15, 2016

Members of Detroit Lodge No. 7 and Port Huron Lodge No. 2 participated in a tour of the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Detroit on Tuesday, March 15, 2016. Detroit lodge member Art Brooks had a significant role in arranging the the tour.

The lodge members going on the tour gathered beforehand at the Island Cove Marina on the Clinton River in Harrison Township for a luncheon sponsored by Detroit Lodge No. 7. The members were briefed about the tour by LCDR Brendan Evans and LTjg Robby Chavez. Following lunch, everyone proceeded by car caravan to the Selfridge Air National Guard Base for the tour. Arriving at the Air Station on Selfridge, LCDR Evans and LTjg Chavez showed a power point presentation on the duties and responsibilities of the U.S. Guard Guard, followed by a video on Search and Air Rescue procedures. Entering the Air Station hangar, the tour group was able to examine two helicopters in the hangar and observe maintenance technicians at work on one of the helicopters. LCDR Evans and LTjg Chavez displayed a typical rescue basket and described its use during rescues. They also answered numerous questions about various aspects of the helicopters. At the end of the tour, lodge President Scott Reynolds presented LCDR Evans with a certificate of appreciation from the lodge.

President Reynolds also presented a cash donation to Chief Petty Officer Robert Holden. CPO Robert Holden is president of the Detroit Chapter of the Chief Petty Officers Association. The donation, collected from individual lodge members of Detroit Lodge No. 7, was given to help support the Chief Petty Officers Association's efforts to aid a member of the Detroit Air Station, 2nd Class Petty Officer Jennifer Smith, who was severely injured in a knife attack while on vacation in Belize last December.
