Past Grand President Capt. Pat Owens passed away on Tuesday evening, November 12, 2013 following a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease.  He was 85.

He was born October 9, 1928 in Mt. Clemens, Michigan to the late Mike and Mary Owens. He married Elizabeth McCartney in June of 1956, a year and a half after he met her. She died November 27, 1998.

In June of 1945, at age 16, Captain Owens began his marine career as a deckhand,  boarding Interlake Steamship's ADRIATIC in the middle of the night from the ferry in St. Clair, not realizing he was embarking on a career that would last 46 years.  In fact, the only diversion from his sailing career was a three-year hitch in the U.S. Army after he was drafted in 1950.

In 1965 he moved to Ford Motor Company as third mate and continued to rise through the ranks to Captain.  Over the years, he sailed all the vessels in the Ford Fleet, retiring in 1992.

Even after his retirement, he occasionally worked relief jobs for Interlake Steamship Company as well as Malcolm Marine Company.

During the 2002 ISMA Grand Lodge convention at the Doubletree Hotel in Novi, Pat, representing Detroit Lodge No. 7, was elected to the office of Grand Lodge President.  He also served the Grand Lodge as vice chairman of the Navigation, Engineering, and Legislative Committee for many years.

In addition to ISMA, Pat was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church in Marysville, and the Knights of Columbus Marysville Council #9526.

He is survived by four children, Dennis Owens of Dearborn Heights, Kelley (Carl) Goertz of Rensselear, New York, Scott (Lisa) Owens of Taylor and Timothy (Athena) Owens of Redford, Michigan; five grandchildren, Patrick, Sean (Jessie), Devin, Timothy and William; a great grandson, Kai; a brother, James (Marge) Owens of Cottrellville Township; and two sisters, Molly Bachler and Margaret Gilbert, both of Sun City West, Arizona. He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery Owens.

On Friday, November 15, 2013, funeral services were held at St. Christopher Catholic Church in Marysville, followed by burial with military honors at Riverlawn Cemetery.

Additional details, including an on-line guest book, can be found on the Funeral Home website.

The newspaper death notice can be viewed HERE.

The family has suggested that memorials be made to the Salvation Army.
